Câmara de Lobos
The house of cork and ivy is nestled into the hillside,
almost a mile up the hill in the town of Câmara de Lobos,
just above the bay and old fisherman town.
Câmara de Lobos in is one of the oldest parishes on the Island,
dating back to the second quarter of 15th century.
The bay received it’s name from one of the discoverers,
Gonçalves Zarco, in estimated 1419.
The name translates to the chamber of the wolves.
The reason for this unusual name is due to the shape of the rock inlet which resembles a chamber as you enter the bay.
As they made discovery and embarked upon land,
they were stunned by the huge amount of sea lions everywhere
surrounding the inlet in the bay.
Many made this area home as it became an established parish in 1430.
The town was excellent for families to lay down roots, to farm and to fish.
The area is known for its mostly sunny climate which made it perfect for residing and building a new life.
